Ulaanbataar was established in its present location in 1778. The geographical and cultural centre is Sukhbaatar Square, named after the first leader of independent Mongolia. There is also the Gandan Monastery which is the only surviving fully operation al Buddhist Monastery to have lasted through the 1930’s Communist purges.
