Bavarian town and seat of the county of the same name; first mentioned in 1226. Located at the northern tip of the Starnberger See (Lake Starnberg, in former times known as Würmsee). Located approx. 26 km/15 mi southwest of Munich, in the state of Bavaria, in Southeast Germany. - Very pleasant smallish town in Upper Bavaria with excellent traffic connections to Munich as well as easy access to Alps, Italy and Austria. Good base camp for skiing as well as hiking and swimming. [tck]
