The state of Gujarat lies on the north western coast of India. Gujarat became a state on 1st May 1960. It was formed out of the northern portions of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency. The capital of Gujarat is Gandhinagar. The other big cities of Gujarat are Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat. Gujarat is also famous for the Gir National Park, the last remaining refuge of the Asiatic Lion. This sanctuary of over 1400 sq. kms also has among the highest number of leopards of any National Park in India.
