237 “trees for free” in Bangalore
This project was started at the end of 2007. At this time a small part of the Earth.org team was working together in Bangalore in South India. Bangalore is known as “garden city” or “green city,” but has lost a lot of its green areas and spirit in the past 10 years due to the rapid growth of industries.
The Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) “Trees for free” is based in Bangalore and plants trees for free - as the name already reveals. Mrs. Janet started “Trees for Free” in memory of her husband Mr. RS Yegneswaran, who passed away in 2005.
"Our tree planting is unique because it involves citizens and communities. They help us in every step right from identifying sites for tree planting, to planting, watering and protecting the saplings. This participation increases awareness about our dependence on trees for survival. It also provides a common cause for people to come together and do something to improve the quality of life for years and generations to come. Our tree planting is done with prior permission of the Government authorities/owners of the tree planting sites."
- Mrs. Janet
Earth.org and “Trees for free” began collaborating and decided to plant 237 trees in Bangalore, one tree for each country in the world. The project was realized in December 2007 when team members of Earth.org and volunteers from “Trees for free” picked up the shovel and planted these trees in a busy main street in the district Koramangala in Bangalore. Our hope is that they will grow and give back some green spirit and fresh air to Bangalore.
